Satellites Need to Speak the Local Language: the Multilingual Technical Files We Handle for Space Companies

Our previous piece covered the IAC in Antalya and Chinese commercial space going abroad. This piece lays out the multilingual technical files we handle, by type. Our clients include satellite and launch firms, ground-station, payload and component companies, and institute commercialisation teams.

One: procurement contracts and technical proposals

International projects are bilingual from the bidding stage. We read the entire tender first, extracting scope of supply, acceptance conditions and milestones separately for checking, avoiding a polished main text with annex pages missed.

Two: interface control documents and test reports

Pin definitions, protocols, timing and dimensions that diverge between language versions cause failures at integration. The core is version control: translation memories for every revision, only changed passages handled after updates, and a separate change comparison. Test-report conditions, criteria and data are checked line by line.

Six types of multilingual technical file in space projects

Three: operating manuals and training material

Manuals are rewritten for the user’s language and setting rather than converted from a Chinese manual: learners’ background, on-site configuration and teaching pace all count. The syllabus is fixed before writing, with bilingual terminology cards where useful.

Four: qualification papers and export documents

Licences, certificates and personnel qualifications go through certified translation with an official stamp, page by page. Export licences and end-user statements follow established wording rather than free translation.

Five: large historical archives

First bilingual libraries run to hundreds or thousands of files; graded MTPE handles them with a machine draft, specialist revision and key-file refinement, while the client’s own termbase is built along the way.

Six: framework agreements and intellectual-property documents

IP ownership, confidentiality and liability clauses follow legal translation standards with legal-specialist review. There is no room for “close enough”.

If a project is starting, send the document list, target languages and key dates through the contact page. For the background see “IAC 2026 in Antalya: the Quiet Infrastructure of Space Cooperation”, and “Want to Translate for the Space Sector?” takes the translator’s view.
