Canton Fair Phase 3 opens tomorrow, the APEC Shenzhen Economic Leaders' Meeting follows in late November — two very different translation demand profiles land simultaneously. Industry-side demand analysis is in "Canton Fair + APEC Dual Event Translation", company-side process changes in "How We Handle Dual-Event Demand". This article is for translators.

Translator choice: Canton Fair exhibition vs APEC conference translation

Distinction one: speed vs quality

Canton Fair exhibition translation prioritises speed. The fair runs only five days and demand bursts in a single window — on-site interpreting must be dispatched at short notice; product catalogues and contracts arrive and leave within days. MTPE is the workhorse here: translators' core task is fast revision of MT drafts, adjusting sector terminology and localisation phrasing. Revision ratio typically sits at 30–50%, delivering 2–3x faster than full human translation.

APEC conference translation prioritises quality. Conference documents, leader speeches and official materials — a mistranslated term can create diplomatic-level misunderstanding. MTPE is used only for first drafts and non-core material; core documents are translated from scratch by human translators. Revision ratio typically exceeds 70%, or translation is done entirely from zero.

Which fits? If you work well under pace, MTPE post-edit quickly and accurately — choose Canton Fair. If you prefer deliberation, can debate a term's rendering repeatedly, and obsess over precision — choose APEC.

Distinction two: generality vs compliance

Canton Fair translation aims at generality. Product catalogues, exhibitor posters and contracts — the target is buyers understanding the content, no economy-specific norms or mandated formats required. Industry-standard terminology is sufficient unless the client specifies otherwise.

APEC conference translation aims at compliance. Conference documents must match APEC Secretariat formatting norms, leader speeches follow diplomatic-level expression conventions, and delegation materials must align with each economy's official terminology standards — Japan, Russia and other economies each maintain fixed translation norms. Certified translation with stamp is mandatory, and compliance checking runs before delivery.

Which fits? If you're satisfied with "good enough to understand" and accept variant renderings side by side — choose Canton Fair. If you habitually look up official translations, insist on term consistency, and work well inside compliance workflows — choose APEC.

Distinction three: batch pipeline vs custom review

Canton Fair translation runs as a batch pipeline — MT engine generates first-draft batches → translators revise quickly → unified terminology check → batch delivery. One translator handles 3–5 product catalogues or contracts per day. Small-language translators earn higher unit rates due to scarcity, but follow the same fast pace.

APEC conference translation runs as custom review — every document goes through translator → senior reviewer → compliance checker → certified stamp, with each step taking days. One translator may only complete 2–3 core documents per week, but each document gets far more post-edit passes than a Canton Fair file.

Which fits? If you enjoy the satisfaction of rapid successive deliveries — choose Canton Fair. If you enjoy the satisfaction of delivering a document only after it feels perfect — choose APEC.

Can you handle both?

Yes, but not simultaneously. Our company splits Canton Fair and APEC projects into separate translator groups — A pool for Canton Fair's pipeline pace, B pool for APEC's custom-review pace. Switching between them needs a 2–3 day rhythm buffer. Mixing both simultaneously risks Canton Fair's pace dragging APEC down or APEC's precision slowing Canton Fair's delivery.
